WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

Naughty Dog Entertainment, a video game distribution well known for the classic, Crash Bandicoot, and the series Uncharted, announced to fans from all over the world that one of their most popular games, The Last of Us, will return for another game.

The Last of Us and The Last of Us: Remastered is an action-adventure survival game exclusive for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. It received 11 awards in 2013 and 2014, including the BAFTA Games Award for Best Game, and BAFTA Games Award for Best Story. According to Forbes.com, the video game was one of the biggest launches of the year,  selling over 3.4 million copies in the first three weeks of its release.

The story features Joel, from Texas, who suffers the loss of his daughter after an outbreak of a cordyceps brain infection.

Twenty years after the outbreak, he attempts to retrieve his belongings with his friend, Tess. He is promised his belongings back if he smuggles something into the city to give it to a militia group known as Fireflies.

Upon their arrival, they learn that the “thing” they must smuggle is a 13 year old girl, Ellie. It is revealed later on that Ellie was infected three weeks prior, after being bitten by “the infected,” but she cannot turn into one.

She becomes a person of interest to the Fireflies, because they believe that she may contain the cure to the infection and may be the savior for mankind.

Ellie and Joel then embark on a journey that lasts them about one year, in their attempt to locate the Fireflies so they may create a vaccine.

At the end of the game, the leader of the Fireflies informs Joel that Ellie will not survive the procedure, but they are positive that she contains the cure. Joel, having formed a bond with Ellie similar to his bond with his daughter, decides to kill the Fireflies before the doctors can perform the surgery on Ellie.

After Ellie wakes up from the anesthesia, Joel lies to her and tells her that the Fireflies had access to people who are afflicted in the same ways as Ellie, and they no longer needed her. Shortly after, she asks Joel if he lied to her about the Fireflies. They leave the compound, and he lies to her again.

Then, the screen cuts to black, the credits roll, and fans everywhere declared that the game would not return for a sequel since it was left on such a somber note.

Despite talk that Naughty Dog would not bring the game back for a sequel, they announced at the Game Awards 2016 that they will return to the game and create a part two.

No release date has been confirmed, but it has been theorized it will not be released for at least another two years.

Since then, fans everywhere developed logical and irrational theories.

One of the most popular theories, so far, is that Joel is dead, and Ellie is hallucinating that he is still alive. In the trailer for the new installment, it shows a figure that resembles a man walking through a house, but many fans are convinced that Joel died after the ending of the first game.

Another theory is that Joel was able to live but Ellie was not. People believed that the timeframe of this game is after her death, maybe due to other survivors. We only see Ellie in this game because they are based on the memories that Joel has of his newfound daughter.
