Movie Review: Movie Falls Short of Trailer Hype

Paranormal Activity 3, a prequel to Paranormal Activity, came out on Oct. 21.

Now, I don’t know about you, but weeks before the movie opened in theaters people were talking about how much they couldn’t wait for the movie to come out. Since I hadn’t seen the trailers yet, I searched and watched them, and matched my peers enthusiasm to watch the movie.

The movie is set 18 years prior to the events of the first two movies and follows sisters Katie (Chloe Csengery) and Kristi (Jessica Brown), their mother, Julie (Lauren Bittner), and her boyfriend, Dennis (Christopher Smith). When Kristi begins interacting with a new friend Toby, Dennis notices that ever since he’s shown up, weird things are happening at the house.

Dennis sets up cameras and, over time, notices strange events, with the highlight being a scene where a ghost under a sheet watches the babysitter and by the time she turns around, the sheet falls…and nothing is underneath it.

At the end of the movie, the family goes to the sisters’ grandmother’s house. In the middle of the night, Julie gets up to go check on the girls and when she doesn’t return for quite some time Dennis goes after her. I’m not going to ruin the ending if you haven’t watched it yet, but let’s just say that Dennis’ ever after isn’t quite that happy.

Overall, the movie was satisfactory. Although most of the scenes from the trailers weren’t in the movie at all, I still got quite a few scares. Compared to the other two movies it wasn’t as scary or exciting and was too short, a mere hour and 20 minutes, but still worth watching.
