During this year’s homecoming week of Oct. 13th-18th, one of the main events was the powderpuff games. Powderpuff is typically a gender-swapped game of American tackle football. Usually, the roles of cheerleaders and football players are swapped; however, Radford does powderpuff a little differently. Any girl can join the powderpuff team, and any boy can be a part of the powderpuff cheer team. Radford students were excited to watch the games.
Sophomore Vanessa Grimaldo-Alvarez stated, “As a freshman, I didn’t go to many homecoming events, but going to them this year made me realize how fun they were. I watched the semi-finals with a group of friends, and we cheered on the sophomores and juniors.”
The games weren’t just fun to watch; they were also fun to participate in. Sophomore Aakaralyn Bolosan was on the sophomore’s powder puff team. When asked why she decided to participate, she said, “I participated because I like to play flag-football, and it gave me something to do. My favorite part was practicing and watching the other teams.”
Each grade level assembled their own teams, and they competed against each other to win the championship. The semi-finals took place on Oct.13th, and the finals took place on Oct. 16th. The semi-finals included sophomores versus freshmen, and juniors versus seniors. The semi-finals concluded with the junior and senior teams advancing to the championship game. In the end, the seniors claimed victory over the juniors and won the championship.
