JV Plays Ground, Varsity Air to Tame Bulldogs

Radford met Waialua winning both games in blowout fashion.

Quarterback Cody Lui-Yuen and running back Tobias Powell played dominant roles in the Varsity Rams win. Lui-Yuen finished 12-16 for 318 yards, and five touchdowns. He also had a key first down on third and 10 that set up Powell for a 51-yard touchdown run. Powell ran for 90 yards on 8 carries and two touchdowns, with a dozen receiving yards thrown in.

The Rams’ defense was heavily penalized, racking up 16 flags for 169 yards. Two of those negated touchdowns. Aside from the penalties, the defense remained solid with a total of three interceptions by Jordan Pacheco, Kenu Keaweehu-Ancon, and a 98-yard return by Izaiah Lavatai.

Va’a Ierome and Kendall Bryant were dominant on the line, each tallying two sacks. Linebacker duo Skylar Babb and Jordan walker teamed up for 17 tackles, nine of those from Babb.

On the defensive side the Junior Varsity team played stingy, allowing 22 offensive yards at the end of the game, and finally allowing a first down with four minutes left in the game and shutting them out.

Safety Jonah Soakai picked off the Bulldogs three times and returned two for touchdowns, linebacker Sipa Leafa also returned an interception for a touchdown. Drew Kirkendall and Mikey Minihan were unstoppable, getting eight tackles and one sack between the two.

“We played pretty great defense,” cornerback Roman Gennero said. “Overall, it was a great game.”

Offensively, they weren’t too rusty either. On the ground they dominated ending with 209 total rushing yards to make up for the 58 pass yards. Wide receiver  Jon LaFoy-Vance scored the lone receiving touchdown of 45 yards in the second quarter. Ryan Dixon had 79 yards on 7 carries for 1 touchdown, including a 20 yard touchdown run.
