“Halloween” is one of the most popular movies to watch this Halloween season.
“Halloween” is one of the most popular movies to watch this Halloween season.

The first major holiday of Fall is the spookiest holiday of the year, Halloween. With that comes great holiday movies. While most people enjoy going out with friends either trick or treating or to parties dressed in elaborate costumes, others prefer to stay at home, hand out candy, and watch a movie. For those that do, here are five movies to watch this Halloween season.

1. Scream (1996)

Starting off our list is not just a classic Halloween film but one of the most influential horror films to date. The original Scream released in 1996, had everything someone could possibly want in a slasher/thriller. Some of the most iconic plot twists in horror films. Stemming from the original came 5 sequels and a series of the same name. (Available on Amazon Prime, Youtube, Vudu, Apple TV and Paramount Plus.)

2. Halloween Town (1998)

Next on our list we veer from the horror genre, with “Halloween Town.” Released in 1998, this Disney created film follows Marnie, a young witch who learns how to use her powers for good and fight back against a powerful evil trying to attack Halloween Town. Although not your typical “scary halloween movie” still a classic, this fun family film will bring many laughs to anybody who watches. (Available on Youtube, Vudu and Disney Plus.)

3. Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Coming in at third is a movie that could be controversial to be on the list. “The Nightmare Before Christmas” was released in 1993. There’s always an argument that it’s actually a Christmas Movie, but it’s close enough that it makes the list. Jack Skellington is the pumpkin king, but he is getting bored with how his life is going. One day he stumbles across Christmas Town full of bright colors and happy spirits. So Jack makes a plan to control Christmas, except it’s not as easy as he thinks. This is a great movie that can honestly be watched on both Halloween and Christmas with a great animation style. (Available on Youtube, Vudu, Apple TV, Amazon Prime and Disney Plus.)

4. Hocus Pocus (1993)

Fourth place is Hocus Pocus, released in 1993. One of the greatest Halloween films ever created, it has everything that is associated with Halloween crammed into one ninety-six minute film. Taking place in Salem, the Sanderson sisters are evil witches trying to steal the souls of children to make themselves immortal. The only way to stop them is for three kids and a talking black cat to steal their spellbook. (Available on Youtube, Apple TV, Amazon Prime and Disney Plus.)

5. Halloween (1978)

In fifth place comes THE Halloween movie. Halloween released in 1978 is one of the most influential slasher/horror films. Michael Myers is a crazy murderer, who escaped his mental health institute and ran away back to his hometown, where he plans on finding his next victims, going on a killing spree of anyone he comes across. What he didn’t plan on was one his “victims” fighting back. Although not the original Halloween horror, it is the movie most people think of when talking about a classic horror movie. (Available on Youtube, Apple Tv, Amazon Prime and Vudu.)

Although these five movies predate the year 2000, they’re some of the most influential and classic Halloween movies ever created. From horror to comedy, anybody can sit down with some popcorn and have a good time watching any on the list.
