Batman vs. Superman

Batman+vs.+Superman

The March 25 release of “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” marked a must-see movie date for DC Comics fans. I had so many reasons to be excited for this movie, including the two well known superhero figures, and an appearance from Wonder Woman. However, expectations might have been too elevated for this film.

The film starts with one of DC’s most beloved characters, Batman (played by Ben Affleck), portraying his dark past and growth into the character he is today. The scene then reveals another event in the past, when Superman is fighting Zod. The scene is seen through Bruce Wayne’s eyes, which helps to separate Superman from his heroic aura, as he sees Superman as a threat to his city.

The movie revolves around Wayne’s uneasy feelings towards Superman, and this conflict develops between Superman and society’s unsettled feelings on Superman’s power, and Batman.

The producer took a different route when a substantial portion of the movie focused on the characters’ past. I realize it was to build up to the final battle between the two superheroes, but most of the audience for this franchise is already aware of their backgrounds. My movie time was wasted with irrelevant flashbacks which took away from a developed plotline.

The film also lacked humor. Used to DC’s more serious films, this did not disturb me. Those accustomed to Marvel’s comedic take on superhero films may find the movie too somber.

While this production was, overall, disappointing I cannot say that I did not enjoy it at all. I was very excited about Wonder Woman’s appearance, and DC’s hint to the creation of the Justice League. My interest was piqued by the conflict aimed at Superman when moviegoers explored his darker side. The film was very artistic to me, and I liked that about this movie. I would suggest this movie to anyone looking for a darker, serious, and dramatic take on superhero films. However, if you’re more accustomed to the quirky, fast paced, comedic style of Marvel, this is not the movie for you.
