Kristi Auyong is Radford’s new Drawing and Painting, Ceramics, and General Art teacher. She recently transferred from McKinley High School. She may be new to Radford, but she has a considerable background with teaching art in the high school scene.
She expresses her passion for the subject, “I’ve been teaching high school art for the past 7 years. I like challenging students to do better and helping them develop their own art style.”
In addition to her many years of teaching, she also brings experience from many different schools to the table. Since this is her fifth school that she’s taught at, her experience will help Radford students hop on to more art projects this year.
“I taught at Sacred Hearts, Navy Hale Keiki, Leilehua High School, and McKinley High School,” she explained.
Her teaching style has grown and evolved over the years. Since she’s gone through different schools and taught for over 7 years, her teaching style has changed a lot since she started.
“I feel like my teaching style has changed a little bit,” she explained, “I taught at an inner city school before this so I had a different style of management and culture than what is here at Radford.”
Here’s how she’d describe herself to students at the moment: “I would describe myself as a caring, friendly and honest teacher.”
Ms. Auyong took interest in a variety of different careers before looking into teaching but ultimately decided that it was just right for her.
She said, “I have always loved teaching art, but in college, I thought I wanted to be a social worker or art therapist until I tried it and realized it wasn’t for me.”
Her change in perspective inspired her to help out students, no matter where she would be teaching.
With her experience in mind, she leaves a piece of advice for Radford students, “Try your best and try something new, you never know what you might like.”
When she’s not teaching, Ms. Auyong takes interest in working out, junk journaling, and traveling. Students can find Ms. Auyong in room 253 if they ever need to get in touch.
