Furuto Finds Rewards when he sees ‘light bulb go on’

Radford’s math department gained a new teacher, Matthew Furuto, who is eager to jump into his work.

“Teaching is a duty I do not take lightly,” Furuto said.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Brigham Young University and a master’s degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in mathematics from Chaminade University.

Although he is a new face to Radford, he is not new to education.

“This is my eleventh year of teaching,” he said. “Prior to Radford, I was at Saint Louis.”

He finds it rewarding to see “the light bulb go on,” and his favorite part of teaching is working with “energetic students” who may not like math initially, but works with them as they learn and grow.

In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family and playing fantasy football.

“I am a chill guy who wants to help others,” he said.

Math teacher Matthew Furuto works with Christina Tatum (12) on an in-class assignment. Furuto is in his 11th year of teaching, and teaches Geometry and Modeling Our World.
