The Tree Is So Much More

Megan DeWitt, Contributing Writer

The pen is mightier than the sword – but the tree is so much more. It is much more ancient, much more wiser. It is the starting point of a pen or pencil. It is where the inspiration blooms, stretching out and exploring every nook and cranny of your mind, like branches caressing the sky. Like a tree, your writing becomes firm and permanent as the years pass by. Though it may become forgotten, drowning with other trees in a forest, your writing will never disappear.  And if, somehow, it is uprooted, the land around it will continue to grow, blossoms and new life sprouting from the old. You nourish your tree through criticism and practice, and nurture it through reading and trying. The most important thing, however, to help your writing grow, is loving it. Love your writing, speak to it, hug it, confess to it. Your writing will eventually provide fruit, and oh, how sweet is that fruit, how sweet is that fruit.
